Review: ‘Winter’s Tale’ adds some magic to your typical date movie fare

2014-02-21-Winters-Tale-movie-poster“Winter’s Tale” is an oddball of a movie, a romance with a healthy dose of magical realism that we don’t typically get in films targeted for adults. For the uninitiated, magical realism refers to fantastic elements appearing in a story that is otherwise set in the normal world, such as demons and flying horses, both of which are part of this story.

Based on the book by Mark Helprin, the film makes significant departures from the source material as screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Minds,” “Angels & Demons”) makes his feature directorial debut.

“Winter’s Tale” is definitely not for everyone, and it has enough flaws to distract from its story, but for a potential date movie, it has enough happy moments and sad moments and sweet moments with some demons and miracles and flying horses thrown in for good measure.

The movie is rated PG-13 for violence and some sensuality.
