Certified divers with an interest in marine conservation are invited to a training event Saturday, May 17, hosted by Taylor County’s Reef Research Team.
The free in-person training will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Taylor County Extension Office.
“This is your chance to become part of Taylor County’s reef monitoring team and help monitor our Gulf of Mexico artificial reefs,” Marine Extension Agent Victor Blanco said.
Participants will learn:
• Fish identification of common and key reef species in the Gulf’s artificial reefs.
• Fish count techniques used in professional reef surveys.
• How artificial reefs support marine life and why monitoring matters.
• How you can contribute valuable data as a volunteer diver.
The interactive classroom-style session will include:
• Hands-on dive practice at Royal Spring (bring your gear).
• Connection with fellow divers and marine conservation enthusiasts.
• Certificate of participation and eligibility to join future reef dives.
“You’ll gain new underwater ID skills that will ‘level up’ your recreational diving too,” Blanco said.
Spots are limited, and early registration is suggested. Online registration is available via the “Artificial Reef Monitoring Training” Facebook page.
