Donald Wayne Lago of Perry, affectionately known to friends and family as “Wayne” or “PaPa,” entered his heavenly home on July 16, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born to Gladys and Donald Lago on Jan. 15, 1951, in St. Petersburg, Wayne proudly served his country in the Army 82nd Airborne. He was an honorary member of the Florida Elks Lodge, serving as Exalted Ruler. Wayne is survived by the love of his life of 53 years, Darlene. Together they loved, laughed and worked hard to build a home and family of: four sons, Chris (April), Jon (Kathryn), David (Heather), Philip (Shanna), all of Perry; seven grandchildren, Travis Lago, Haley Vann (Justin), Austin Lago (Heidi), Dylan Lago, Slade Lago (Holli), Daniel Lago (Caroline), and Taelyn Lago, all of Perry, along with four greatgranddaughters, Aspynn Vann, Braelynn Lago, Sophie Lago and baby J Lago (due in September). He was extremely proud of the family he built and loved them all in a special way. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Steppie (Don) of St. Petersburg, and brother, Steve Lago (Sally) of Perry, along with a host of nieces, nephews and extended family. Wayne was preceded in death by: his parents; two sisters, Pat and Nancy Lago; and an infant niece, Stefanie Currey, all of St. Petersburg. Wayne was a Baptist, serving as deacon for many years. He believed in Jesus and instilled the love of Jesus in his family. All who knew him know that laughing and joking was his love language; he always strived to make others laugh. He had a heart for children, he enjoyed playing “Santa” for the community children, just to see them smile. He enjoyed the outdoors, farming, carpentry, going to auctions and being a collector of all things junk. His boys called him “the jack of all trades.” He was always willing to give advice and help where needed. Wayne will be sorely missed, but his spirit carries on through those who loved him. A celebration of life, along with a private family interment, will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Hospital.
