John David Malone, 78, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2025, after a difficult battle with cancer. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones, and under the care of Big Bend Hospice. The son of Anson C. and Emma Jewel Malone, David was born Jan. 10, 1947, in Columbus, Ga. He resided in Columbus and Phenix City, Ala., for most of his life, and was employed as a locomotive engineer with Norfolk Southern Railway. Following retirement, David relocated to Perry, where he pursued his greatest passions: fishing and golf. He obtained his captain’s license and provided years of charter experiences as “Capt. Dave.” David was preceded in death: by his parents, Anson and Emma Jewel; his son, Michael; brother, Joseph; too many friends to name; and several beloved dogs. He is survived by: his wife of 60 years, Gennie Brooks Malone; his daughter, Chris Malone Black (Ed); son, Alan Malone; grandchildren, Sarah Black Hicks (Andrew), Josh Black and Magen Cleveland; two great-granddaughters, Brooklyn Cleveland and Olivia Hicks; and his dog, Scooter. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Joe P. Burns Funeral Home, Perry.
