City council holding off spending $25,000 on new fire station until state budget is finalized

    Posted on March 18, 2026

City Manager John Hart presented this artificial intelligence (AI) generated conceptual design to the city council last week, using existing architectural features of Taylor County Community Bank, which is located adjacent to the Jefferson Street property the City of Perry would like to purchase as the future site for a new fire station (left) — and possibly a future home for the Perry Police Department (right). The city is seeking funding to purchase the two vacant lots between Church St. and West Duval St. adjacent to the new bank, which previously purchased the property as part of a larger parcel that included the former Jackson Furniture building and nearby residence.

While waiting on the Florida Legislature to agree on its final state budget for 2026-27, the Perry City Council will hold off on spending $25,000 for a package of preliminary reports needed to move forward with a proposed $7.2 million replacement of the city’s fire station.
