Taylor County Superintendent of Schools Reggie Wentworth (right) addresses the Taylor County Commission at its meeting on Tuesday, April 21, urging the board to approve placing a referendum on November’s general election ballot asking voters to decide on a new proposed half-cent sales surtax to benefit the public school district. Wentworth told the commission that the tax, which is expected to generate around $1.8 million to $2 million annually in revenue for the district, would be used to fund improvements for facilities, security, technology and transportation. Although the commission voted unanimously to place the issue before the voters, several commissioners made it clear that their vote should not be taken as an endorsement of the proposal, only that they wanted to let the public decide whether or not to authorize the school board to begin levying the new tax next year.
