Spike Jonze, who began his career by directing music videos, has made a name for himself by bringing us unique films with unusual characters. Twice he collaborated with writer Charlie Kaufman for “Being John Malkovich ” in 1999 and “Adaptation” in 2002. He returned in 2009 for his “Where the Wild Things Are,” for which he also wrote the screenplay.
Last December, he returned again with another film he wrote and directed, “Her,” which I called one of the most unique romances I’d seen with one of the most original screenplays in years. I wasn’t the only one who thought so, as the film went on to earn the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
As of this week, the film is now available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download.
In an age where we complain about sequels and reboots and rehashes, “Her” is entirely its own, brought to life by Jonze with a wonderful connection to its characters and a not-so-subtle commentary on where we are heading with our technology and our own relationships with others. “Her” is beautiful, both in story and visually, and one of the best films of 2013. It ultimately found itself at No. 3 on my Top 10 list for the year.
The film is rated R for language, sexual content and brief graphic nudity.
