Review: Love amidst life, death and cancer in ‘Fault in our Stars’

When I saw that first trailer for “The Fault in Our Stars,” I had no idea it was based on a widely popular book which has sent millions of fans into hysterics. But the story of unlikely love between two teenage cancer patients did indeed intrigue me.

The film itself is a smart, funny, tragic, powerful and realistic portrayal of a teenage romance set against the backdrop of shortened lives. Having not read the book, I can’t entirely gauge how fans will respond to this movie, but I would have to imagine they would be pleased. Featuring strong performances, steady direction and a story which finds a level of realism that few films can achieve, “A Fault in Our Stars” holds a powerful message that no matter our own circumstance, is worth seeing.

“The Fault in Our Stars” is a powerful film, with strong performances and a story that if you are lucky is not actually relatable, but still understandable. It is a movie that should enthrall fans and newcomers alike.

The film is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, some sexuality and brief strong language.
