“A Walk Among the Tombstones” is not the same kind of action flicks Neeson (“Taken,” “Nonstop”) has been seen in lately, and is in fact quite a solid film with good acting, strong tension and disturbing villains. It’s not one I’m probably going to remember vividly five years from now, but for those looking for a crime thriller not afraid to pull its punches, whether to the gut or the stomach, this one stands out.
There isn’t much in the way of action in this film, so as with “The Drop,” some will probably find the movie slow or even boring through much of its first half. But also like “The Drop,” writer/director Scott Frank (“The Lookout”) helps create an overall opressive feel which helps keep the tension tight even when the action is light. (I should point out that while I enjoyed “A Walk Through the Tombstones,” “The Drop” is the better movie to be sure.)
There are several disturbing scenes, but most are not gruesome, leaving the worst bits to the imagination, which works quite well, because usually the mind can come up with worse visuals than the movie itself can show.
The film is rated R for strong violence, disturbing images, language and brief nudity.
