Facing a shortage of bus drivers, especially substitutes, the Taylor County School Board is considering several ways to entice more people to take the job, including eliminating the requirement that applicants must have a high school diploma and possibly increasing the starting salary.

The school board discussed the issue Tuesday, with Director of Transportation Keith Johnson telling board members the district is short a number of drivers and there are currently no substitutes available, forcing the remaining drivers to “double up” on routes and the department to be “creative” in getting children to and from school.
