Hollywood has made some great baseball movies over the decades, including “Field of Dreams,” which is one of my favorites of all time. So I was surprised to discover, after doing a little online research upon seeing the trailer for “42,” how little the spotlight has been turned on the story of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play Major League Baseball in the modern era.
“42” picks up shortly after the end of World War II in 1945. Brooklyn Dodgers’ executive Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford, “Indiana Jones”) is looking to add an African American player to his team, breaking the league’s color barrier, and ultimately decides on Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman, “Persons Unknown”).
