Although British Petroleum’s (BP) reported $18.7 billion settlement over damages resulting from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill has not yet been finalized by the federal government or the judge overseeing the case, it could result in between $3 million and $3.2 million arriving in Taylor County to fund local coastal projects, including possible canal dredging.
County Administrator Dustin Hinkel updated commissioners Monday evening on the latest developments in the case, noting that while they have not received any official word on the amount the county could receive as part of the settlement, Taylor County is specifically mentioned in the federal RESTORE Act, which includes multiple formulas on how the resulting settlement will be divided between states and local governments.
