Nathan H. Newman, 81, a longtime resident of Greenville, died\nJan. 9, 2019 at his son\u2019s home in Live Oak, surrounded by his family. Nathan\nwas born March 12, 1937, in Dowling Park to Lawrence Cross Newman and Katie\nRichardson Newman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nathan was of the Baptist faith and attended New Macedonia\nBaptist Church in Greenville. He spent his early years in a variety of trades,\nincluding insurance agent for Independent Life and the State Road Dept. In\n1977, he and his sister\u2019s family opened a business supplying kindling fat wood\nfor Orvis Corp for over 20 years. He retired from the County of Madison in 2015,\nafter 15 years of service. Family was a very important part of his life, and\nthey would gather each month at his home for a feast he had prepared. In his\nspare time he enjoyed golfing, fishing and playing poker with his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nathan was preceded in death by: his wife, Virginia Newman;\nhis parents, Lawrence and Katie Newman; his brothers, Junior and Norman; and\nhis sisters, Ruby Arnold, Ruth Clark and Georgia Braswell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is survived by: his children, Randy Newman (Deidra), David\nNewman (Kathy) and Vicki Bice (Ernie); his dedicated longtime companion, Doris\nBoothe; his brother, Ronald Newman (JoAnn), and sister-in-law Betty Newman; 10\ngrandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces and\nnephews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m. at\nBurns Funeral Home of Madison with Rev. James Carrier officiating. Interment\nservices will follow immediately afterwards in Evergreen Cemetery in\nGreenville. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at\nBurns Funeral Home of Madison. All arrangements are under the direction of\nBurns Funeral Home of Madison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
