{"id":24086,"date":"2019-08-28T09:59:09","date_gmt":"2019-08-28T13:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/perrynewspapers.com\/?p=24086"},"modified":"2019-08-28T09:59:10","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T13:59:10","slug":"john-alton-southerland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/perrynewspapers.com\/?p=24086","title":{"rendered":"John Alton Southerland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Mr. John Alton Southerland, 86, of\nDouglasville, Ga., and Steinhatchee, Fla., passed away Saturday, August 24,\n2019.&nbsp;He was born in Cleburne County, Ala., on January 30, 1933, the son\nof the late Columbus Cicero Southerland and the late Ella Mae Warren\nSoutherland.&nbsp;He graduated from Dallas High School and soon after joined\nthe United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. In 1953, John married his\nsoulmate, Ivalee Marie Hunter. John worked for Bellsouth as a cable repairman\nfor many years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of\nSteinhatchee.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John was known to be a terrific\nhusband and a genuine, pleasant, humble and kind person who was always smiling\nand enjoying life.&nbsp;He loved many things outdoors: fishing, sports,\ncoaching kids, college football and the Atlanta Braves, whose games he rarely\nmissed. John will be missed by all who knew and loved him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to his parents, he was\npreceded in death by his beloved wife, Ivalee Marie Hunter Southerland; his\nson, Tony Alton Southerland; his granddaughter, Christy Broyles; and his\nbrother, Robert Southerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John is survived by his daughters:\nCarol Petrie of Douglasville, Ga., and Patty Southerland of Steinhatchee;\ngrandchildren and their spouses: David and Nicci Schmidt, Michelle Southerland,\nMark and Crystal Southerland, and Clint and Michelle Hood; great grandchildren\nand spouse: Jessica and Nathan Howard, Jonathan Broyles, Justin Broyles, Callee\nSchmidt, Jaxxon Schmidt, Novalee Southland, Cami Layfield, and Hendrix Hood;\none great great-granddaughter, Raegan Howard; sister: Nora Freeman of Piedmont,\nAla.; nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The family will receive friends at\nHightower\u2019s Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Funeral Service will be held\nWednesday, August 28, 2019, at 2 p.m. at Hightower\u2019s Memorial Chapel with\nReverend Arthur Southerland and Reverend Frankie Southerland officiating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interment will follow in Sunrise\nMemorial Gardens with Reverend Moses Florence officiating.&nbsp;Military\nFuneral Honors provided by the United States Navy.&nbsp;Pallbearers will be\nDavid Schmidt, Clint Hood, Mark Southerland, Jonathan Broyles, Justin Broyles\nand Nathan Howard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may share your thoughts and\ncondolences online at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hightowersmemorial.com\">www.hightowersmemorial.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hightower\u2019s Memorial Chapel of\nDouglasville has charge of the arrangements.
