Steinhatchee man, 57, killed in freak accident

A 57-year-old Steinhatchee man, Tony Alton Southerland, was killed during a freak traffic accident on Highway U.S. 19 Thursday morning, about three miles north of Wayside Park.

Southerland was struck and killed while apparently trying to flag down a passing vehicle after crashing his pick-up truck into a nearby water-filled ditch.

PHOTO: Members of the Madison County Dive Team conducted a grid search of the water-filled ditch/stream to make sure no additional victims were involved in Thursday’s fatal crash.
