Review: De Niro may be ‘The Intern,’ but he and Hathaway are total pros

There are some movies that just feel like they should work solely because of who is involved in making them. “The Intern,” for example, features writer/director Nancy Meyers (“Something’s Gotta Give,” “The Holiday”) along with stars Robert De Niro (“Silver Linings Playbook”) and Anne Hathaway (“Interstellar”).

Of course, there are few guarantees in life and even fewer when it comes to movies. I’m still scarred by Ridley’s Scott “The Counselor,” which was downright horrible despite a great writer, a talented director and a great cast.

Fortunately, “The Intern” lives up to its billing, providing a funny and sweet story about an up-and-coming CEO and her senior citizen intern. It’s not a deep movie, but it does bring the laughs while not being afraid to also bring the more serious moments as well. And while De Niro and Hathaway have starred in headier material elsewhere, both bring their A-game, keeping their characters relatable while also providing a level of authenticity the story needs to connect to the audience.

All in all, “The Intern” is well worth the time, bringing laughs, smiles, maybe a few tears and lots of fun.

The movie is rated PG-13 for some suggestive content and brief strong language.
