Review: Family troubles and little white lies in ‘Big Wedding’

One of the biggest complaints against romantic comedies–at least mine–is that they too often rest comfortably inside the predictable confides of their conventions.

“The Big Wedding,” however, does not stretch its creative muscles too hard and instead gives us the same outlandish catastrophes involving lies and misunderstandings played out with the same broadly painted eccentric characters. But something happened on the way to mediocrity. The cast of “The Big Wedding” mined the script for all of its worth, creating fully realized characters that are funny while also managing to be worth the emotional investment a film like this really needs to truly succeed.

“The Big Wedding” somehow manages to control its various story lines and large cast of characters by finding just the right balance of sentimentality and adult humor. I would not have guessed it going in, but if you were to ask me if I would recommend this movie, I would have to say, “I do.”

The film is rated R for language, sexual content and brief nudity.
