With many coastal residents beginning what appears to be a lengthy clean-up in the wake of Hurricane Hermine, local officials are advising people not to wait on a federal disaster declaration to begin making repairs to their property.
Taylor County Administrator Dustin Hinkel said the process for such a declaration and assistance to arrive from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will take weeks, not days. In meantime, he urged those affected by the storm to contact their insurance companies and begin the claim process as soon as possible.
