Even after watching the news over the past few weeks about the devastating wildfires plaguing California, I have to admit that I still can’t get my head wrapped around it. I understand hurricanes. I’ve lived through several during my years in Florida. But, fortunately, we have not had to deal with a forest fire of that devastating nature here in Taylor County in a long time.
This weekend, we will celebrate the 62nd annual Florida Forest Festival, which began in 1956 as an event to promote woodland fire safety within the community. At the time, the county was facing numerous fires each year, hurting the local economy and putting lives and property in danger.
Thus, it felt rather timely to go see “Only the Brave,” a new film chronicling the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, the only municipal fire company to earn such a designation, which is usually reserved for state and federal crews.
