‘Wonderstruck’ is a different family film deserving a look

In my preview last week, I noted how some movies manage to pass me by despite the time I spend watching films, not to mention reading, writing and talking about them. That was the case with “Wonderstruck,” an admittedly small theatrical release from Amazon Studios. Having now seen it, the lack of marketing behind the project is quite a shame, because it is a quality family movie featuring rare patience to let its story unfold at a leisurely pace.

“Wonderstruck” is based on the book by Brian Selznick, who also wrote “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” which was adapted by director Martin Scorsese into “Hugo,” my favorite movie of 2012. This time, Selznick writes his own adaptation with the directing duties falling to Todd Haynes, who gave us “Carol,” one of my top movies of 2015.
