    James Martin Ellison

    James Martin Ellison, 80, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018. James (Martin) was born on May 13, 1937, in Perry to Jesse James Ellison and Maggie (Gamble) Ellison.

    He was the youngest of five siblings, including three brothers, Melvin, Robert and Willard, and one sister, Jessebelle.

    James was preceded in death by: his son, Darryl Ellison; and his wife, Betty Jean Ellison.

    James and Betty married in 1959, and celebrated their 52nd anniversary before her passing in 2011. Martin was a game warden in the Everglades starting in the 1950’\s, following his passion for hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Succeeding his employment as a game warden, he worked as a police officer for the Perry Police Department. In 1963, he started his lifelong career as a locomotive engineer with Southern Railroad (Buckeye Cellulose Corporation), retiring in the early 1990’s. Martin was also a lifelong cattleman, following in the footsteps of previous generations.

    Mr. Ellison is survived by: his three children, James Michael Ellison, Melvin (Terri) Ellison and Dianna (Lamar) Hathcock; four grandchildren, Marla Jean Hathcock, Anderlyn (Travis) Johnson, Lamar Hathcock III and Alana (Matt) Burton; and one great grandchild, Ava Johnson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    In lieu of flowers, the Taylor County FFA Alumni will be accepting donations in James or Betty Ellison’s name. This donation will help assist local chapter students with their expenses. Please make contributions to: Taylor County FFA Alumni/Sarah Sapp, 1900 S. Dixie Hwy, Perry, FL, 32348.
