Director Steven Soderbergh has a pretty eclectic resume, including such films as the “Ocean’s” trilogy, “Erin Brockovich,” “Traffic,” “Sex, Lies & Videotape,” “Contagion” and “Magic Mike.” Last year he gave us “Logan Lucky,” which was in some ways a blue-collar “Ocean’s 11,” and a movie that made my list of the most underrated films of 2017.
Soderbergh’s latest movie is “Unsane,” a surprisingly low-budget affair at $1.2 million, which was reportedly shot entirely with an iPhone. The result is a film that looks like it had a low budget and was shot with an iPhone, but that actually works to its advantage, as it tells a story about paranoia and voyeurism with a young woman trying to escape her stalker… or perhaps it’s all in her mind.
The movie overcomes a shaky first act to deliver a pretty satisfying psychological thriller that might not always keep you guessing, but it will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
