“This Is the End” follows a group of well-known Hollywood celebrities, all playing themselves, led by Seth Rogen (“The Green Hornet”) and Jay Baruchel (“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”) partying at James Franco’s house when the end begins in fiery earnest.

Based on the never released short film “Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse”–the trailer for which is available on YouTube–“This Is the End” was co-written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg (“Superbad,” “Pineapple Express”), who makes his directorial debut here.

The movie is exceedingly vulgar, but its breakneck pace provides plenty of laughs and little time to put much thought into what you’re watching. Which is a good thing, because there really isn’t much of a story here, but that’s honestly beside the point.

The movie is rated R for crude and sexual content throughout, brief graphic nudity, pervasive language, drug use and some violence.
