Irene Janie Elizabeth Mathieu, 86, died June 11, 2018, in Mayo. Irene was born Aug. 22, 1931, in Cross City, to Barney Pasco Revels and the former Josephine Long.
Irene was a graduate of Dixie County High School, where she was a cheerleader. She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. Irene was a homemaker who will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her family and cooking for her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Barney Pasco Revels and Josephine Long Pendarvis; her husband, Jerry Mathieu; two sons, Gordon Cook Sr. and Bill Cook; a daughter, Brenda Tyson; a brother, Tracy Pendarvis; and two sisters, Kathleen Sullivan and Lois White.
She is survived by: two daughters, Tammy Cook (Mike), of Cross City, and Vicki Miller (Jon), of Suwannee; one sister, Jo Allie Downing (Junius), of Cross City; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, at New Prospect Baptist Church with Bro. Cole Downing officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends starting one hour prior to the service. All arrangements are under the care of Burns Funeral Home of Mayo.
