I’ve said many times over the years that Pixar had one of the greatest runs of any film studio in producing a string of wonderfully crafted and intelligently told stories, from “Toy Story” in 1995 to “Toy Story 3” in 2010 and everything in between. After that, the studio fell off a bit, but has since been making its way back to the top with films like “Inside Out” and “Coco.”
Through it all, however, my all-time favorite Pixar movie remains 2004’s “The Incredibles,” written and directed by Brad Bird. It tells the story of a family of super-powered individuals who must come out of government-enforced hiding to save the day. Although I’m not a fan of sequels for the sake of sequels, I’ve been looking forward to the next chapter of the Parr family’s saga ever since seeing the film’s epilogue scene in which they face off against the Underminer in a school parking lot.
Finally, after 14 long years, “Incredibles 2” is here. Despite Pixar’s less-than-stellar record of producing sequels outside the “Toy Story” franchise, this is one to be celebrated for delivering everything fans want while also telling a logical and emotional story to continue the characters’ journey. When the first film hit theaters in 2004, there weren’t many examples of truly good superhero movies — something that can’t be said today — but this franchise still stands out as one of the best.
