Before the first county budget workshop began on Monday morning, county staff had managed to trim Taylor County’s projected $1.2 million budget deficit by almost $300,000 – leaving commissioners tasked with finding just under $900,000 in cuts to be able to adopt a balanced budget and avoid a tax increase.
However, that projected budget shortfall ballooned back up to $1.6 million during the first of four scheduled budget workshop sessions Monday morning, after Doctors’ Memorial Hospital (DMH) representatives requested commissioners allocate one-half of the county’s annual one-cent sales tax revenues ($714,000) to “keep the doors open” by funding capital improvements like replacement ambulances, operating room lights, air conditioning units and other equipment.
