Beach residents save drowning scalloper

July 15 proved to be much more than a lazy Sunday for two Keaton Beach neighbors and their families. This past weekend started out rather routinely for Bob Wood and Denver Fleming – until a report of a missing scalloper prompted them to spring into action.

According to Wood’s wife, Carol, their daughter and her family were out in the boat fishing Sunday when a distraught man in a kayak paddled up to them. The man explained that he was scalloping with his friend when his friend went missing, Carol said.
