Powerful, authentic ‘Eighth Grade’ is one of the year’s best movies so far

A truly great film will rarely leave you just because you walked out of the theater. It asks questions, or at least forces you to ask questions, and the answers don’t often come easily or quickly. That was the case with “Eighth Grade,” a coming-of-age story that feels all-too relatable, yet impossibly foreign.

The film is from first-time screenwriter and director Bo Burnham, a comedian who got his start making Youtube videos, making him the perfect person to tell the story of a young girl struggling to make it through the final week of eighth grade in a world dominated by social media. Even though “Eighth Grade” is his freshman effort, it’s very hard to tell, and the movie is one of my favorites of 2018 so far.
