    Steady at the Helm

    Posted on October 12, 2018

    “He loved Taylor County.”

That is the first thing Cashway Building Products founder Walter Davis “Buddy” Helm Sr. would want you to know, according to his son, Bud Helm Jr.

“He lived a good life,” Bud said of his late father, who passed away on Sept. 26 at the age of 81.

PHOTO: Walter “Buddy” Helm Sr. is shown sitting on heart pine “sinker” logs that were cut down with an ax around 1837 in South Georgia and later recovered from the Withlacoochee River. “Back then the largest sawmill in the world was located where the Suwannee and Withlacoochee came together, and the rivers were the only way to get these logs to the sawmill,” Bud Helm said.
