    Lillian Gloria “Brownie” Holmes

    Lillian Gloria “Brownie” Holmes, 90, of Perry, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, in Thomasville, Ga., following a brief illness. Gloria was born Jan. 6, 1928, in Boyd to Boyet Levi Poppell and Lilly Pearl York Poppell.

    She graduated from Taylor County High School where she was active in sports and played on the girl’s basketball team. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of First Baptist Church of Perry. Not only was Gloria a homemaker, she also worked as a teacher’s aide and a bookkeeper for many years. In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling, painting, and spending time with her family and friends.

    She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, James “J.H.” Holmes Jr. in May of 2018; and her eight brothers and sisters, Delmar and Samuel Poppell, Coretha Burnett, Hazel Davis, Lucy Cochran, Sarah Paris, Myrtis Roberts and Alva Lee Odom.

    She is survived by: her children, Jeanne Diane Owens and James Daryl Holmes; six grandchildren, Shane Owens (Jade), Janice James (Roy), Daniel Owens (Betsy), Daryl Holmes, Jr. (Christy), Kristina Brown (Matt) and David Holmes (Kaitlin); 14 great-grandchildren, Taylor, Hunter, Britton, Karlee, Addison, J.P., Eli, Tucker, Weston, Cailyn, Autumn, Cayden, Kylee and Anniston; and one great-great-granddaughter, Carter, and one great-great-grandson, Cannon; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Perry with Pastor Steven Ruff officiating. Interment services will follow immediately afterwards in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service starting at 10 a.m. All arrangements are under the care of Burns Funeral Home of Perry.
