The headstone for the 21-year-old read, “Gone, But Not Forgotten.”
The sentiment was inscribed in stone in 1921 and, sadly, did not stand the test of time as decades passed.
Surrounding trees and undergrowth overtook the gravesite of Bertha Mae Thomas, and her memory was nearly lost forever.
But, thanks to a group of dedicated community volunteers, Thomas’ memory and those of dozens of others buried in perhaps the oldest section of Springhill Cemetery are coming back into the light.
Restoration on the three-acre plot, located at the corner of Green Street and Springhill Road, has taken a massive step forward with clearing undergrowth and trees from the site.
