Scallop season pushed to July 1?

    Posted on February 8, 2019

Since 2017, the annual scallop season has started roughly two weeks early off most of the Taylor County coast — will do so again this year, opening on Saturday, June 15.

But, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will consider a draft rule later this month that would return the season opening to July 1 beginning in 2020.

PHOTO: Sea Hag Marina owner Charlie Norwood was one of several Steinhatchee business owners urging Taylor County Commissioners to pass a resolution petitioning the FWC not to move the proposed 2020 scallop season opening date back two weeks to July 1. Norwood, Don Everett Jr. and others told commissioners the proposed change would have an adverse effect on coastal businesses.
