Early scallop open date approved

Thanks to a strong showing from the Taylor and Dixie coastal communities — especially Steinhatchee — the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has reversed course on its proposal to return the start of the annual scallop season to July 1 starting in 2020.

Instead, the commission unanimously approved a modified draft rule that would permanently set the season along the Taylor County coast (roughly south of the Fenholloway River) and the entire Dixie County coast from June 15 to Sept. 10.
