When Robert Lee “Toby” Faulkner landed on the beach at Iwo Jima on Feb. 19, 1945, the stark volcanic wasteland was a far cry from the lush piney woods of his Taylor County home.
As a member of the 24th Marine Division, he had waited hours offshore while thousands of his fellow Marines hit the beach and were cut down by relentless enemy fire.
