DUI manslaughter charges brought

Charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and DUI with damage to person/property have been filed against the driver of one of the four vehicles involved in the Dec. 21, 2018 fatal crash in Madison County that claimed the life of veteran educator and Taylor County High School JROTC instructor 1st Sgt. Eddie L. Smith.

According to the April 25 charging document filed by Assistant State Attorney Jeffrey Siegmeister — 35-year-old Tanner Marcus Welch of Ft. Stewart, Ga. was driving under the influence of alcohol when he “did cause or contribute to causing the death” of Smith.
