Agitated anglers protest FWC trout rule proposal

    Posted on August 2, 2019

Capt. Steve Hobbs of Skeeterbite Fishing Charters in St. Marks was one of more than 20 anglers and fishing guides who spoke during the FWC workshop win Steinhatchee.

A standing room only crowd of trout fishermen and charter fishing guides packed the Steinhatchee Community Center Wednesday to protest spotted seatrout changes being proposed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

The FWC staff proposal includes a number of rule changes that would: reduce the slot limit from 15-20 inches to 15-19 inches, prohibit the keeping of any fish over the slot (currently anglers are allowed one fish over 20 inches), prohibit charter captains or guides from keeping a limit while on a for-hire trip, divide the current Northwest Florida region into two zones (Western Panhandle and Big Bend) and re-establish a February closure in the Western Panhandle.
