Board to vote on new ‘Safe School’ policies

    Posted on August 30, 2019

Local school officials continue to take steps to address student safety as they prepare to adopt new “safe school” policies that will take effect later this school year – more than a year and a half after 17 people were killed and another 17 wounded in a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. on Feb. 14, 2018.

The Taylor County School Board did not discuss specific wording at a July 30 meeting, but did vote 5-0 in favor of advertising for a Sept. 3 public hearing to gather input on a proposed “Safe and Secure Schools Policy” that spells out threat assessment, safety, security and emergency plans and procedures designed to provide a safe, secure and orderly learning environment at all local schools and school-sponsored events.
