Soldier is jailed for DUI manslaughter

A U.S. Army soldier facing DUI manslaughter and other charges is now in custody in Madison awaiting arraignment in connection with the Dec. 21, 2018 crash that killed veteran educator and JROTC instructor 1st Sgt. Eddie L. Smith.

Charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and four counts of DUI with damage to person/property were filed against 35-year-old Tanner Marcus Welch of Ft. Stewart, Ga. on April 25 this year, approximately four months after the fatal crash in Madison County.
