‘Frozen II’ builds on the original’s icy ideas

As I said in my preview column last week, I wasn’t the biggest fan of “Frozen” when it hit theaters in 2013. I didn’t dislike the movie, but I felt other Disney releases such as “Tangled” and “Wreck-It Ralph” were better.

So, when I say I liked “Frozen II” considerably more than the original, know where my baseline is. The trailers for this movie, especially the first teaser, were surprisingly intense, almost to the point of being dark. I have to admit that they actually got me more excited for the sequel than any residual good feelings about the original (I had followed the advice of the song and let that movie go).

Does “Frozen II” live up to those trailers? Easy answer: No. But, the film does build on the world and themes of the first film and takes us to the next logical evolution of the story and its characters, while also injecting a new theme about how life is always changing and that it isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
