Seeking revenge in ‘The Rhythm Section’

Of the various films that we got in January 2020, “The Rhythm Section” was one that had me intrigued, both due to a solid trailer and the mystery behind its name.

Overall, the film does not live up to its January-action movie pedigree (and I mean that in a good way), and while it’s not likely a film I will remember when looking back on 2020, it is a decent revenge flick with a very strong lead performance from Blake Lively (“A Simple Favor”). And, we do find out why it’s called “The Rhythm Section.”

The story begins three years after a plane crash killed hundreds of people off the coast of England. Stephanie Park (Lively) lost her parents and her siblings in the disaster, and since that time has gone from promising college student to a prostitute and junkie. One day, a reporter (Raza Jaffrey, “Lost in Space”) tells her that the crash was not an accident but the result of a bombing. He has even found the bomber thanks to his source, a former MI6 agent he simply calls “B” (Jude Law, “Captain Marvel”).

It’s hard to say more without spoiling the first act, because the story does take quite a bit of time to get going. It didn’t really bother me, but if you’re not a fan of slow-moving films, this one is probably not for you.
