‘Birds of Prey’ flies through R-rated territory

It’s not often that a film underperforms so badly that the studio renames the movie days after release. It’s also not often that a studio thinks renaming a film after the fact will actually help its box office success. But, that’s exactly what we got with “Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn,” which is now called “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.”

The new title is probably more accurate, considering the latest DC Comics film can be more aptly described as a “Harley Quinn” movie with a backdoor pilot for a future “Birds of Prey” movie. Still, despite the less-than-spectacular box office numbers and the odd name change, the movie is actually a lot of fun.

The movie is a sequel to (or possibly a soft reboot of) 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” which introduced us to the film version of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). Fans were very divided over that movie, although Robbie was one of its high points.
