‘Scoob!’ is another misfire for WB

So, when writing last week’s streaming preview, I was so focused on the calendars for Netflix and the other services that I missed a brand-new film being released on premium video-on-demand (VOD). In my defense, the new Warner Bros. Animation release, “Scoob!” is only the second film to go straight to VOD since the coronavirus lockdown.

Based on the classic cartoon characters, Scooby Doo and his mystery-solving pals, “Scoob!” is now available for online rental for $20 and digital purchase for $25. Whether you think the film is worth the sticker price will likely depend on how desperate you are for new entertainment options for your kids, because the movie itself is pretty disappointing.

For what was supposed to be a theatrical release — the first for the franchise since 2004’s live action “Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” — the animation is subpar at best and the story line feels very lightweight, despite how busy it is. And, while we’re on the subject of the story, this is definitely a case where the writers tried to do way too many things in one movie.
