    2 fatal Memorial Day crashes

    Posted on May 27, 2020

The northbound lanes of Hwy. 19 were blocked just after 8 a.m. Monday morning as a helicopter prepared to transport the victim of a single-vehicle roll-over crash between Salem and Athena one half mile south of Bill Powell Road. The twisted and mangled remains of a pick-up truck could be seen flipped on its roof, with its doors peeled back to allow first responders access inside. Contents of the vehicle could be seen scattered across the median and right-of-way as Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers used fluorescent paint to mark key areas of the scene before taking photographs. Two unrelated single-vehicle crashes occurring more than five hours apart Monday, May 25, claimed the lives of a Taylor County woman and a Georgia teen.

The 18-year-old driver involved in the first Memorial Day crash, which occurred at 2:18 a.m. on Beach Road (CR361), was airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
