‘The New Mutants’ has a lot of characters, but not much depth

One hundred and seventy-three days. Nine days shy of six months. That’s how long I went without going to a movie theater due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Like everything else concerning the virus, opinions are mixed on the safety of going to a movie now that theaters are back open. I’m not here to advocate one way or the other, but I will say the feeling of normalcy it brought me was a wonderful boost to my mental health.

There were 24 people who had reserved tickets for the showing of “The New Mutants” I went to, roughly 10% of the auditorium’s maximum occupancy. No one was within 10 or so feet of me, and everyone I saw was wearing a mask. So was I.

Because I went, I can now tell you about “The New Mutants,” which sadly isn’t a terribly good movie.

The final film in Fox’s X-Men cinematic universe, “The New Mutants” tries to do something different from its predecessors, and I appreciate that. The idea of combining a comic book adaptation with a horror film sounds great on paper, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired, resulting in an average comic book movie and a middling, at best, horror flick.
