I know for a fact I’m not the only person who has thought about how I would fare in the event of a zombie invasion. (To be honest, I give myself about 24-48 hours).
Sure, it’s a ridiculous exercise, but it can also be an enlightening one as well, when you realize you are either very well prepared for such an emergency or have absolutely no useful skills to offer in such a world.
The second possibility is what befalls the main characters in the new comedy/sci-fi/horror film “Save Yourselves.” Instead of zombies, there are fluffy puffballs with a killer appetite.
The film, which is now available through video on demand (VOD), follows New York couple Su (Sunita Mani, “Mr. Robot”) and Jack (John Reynolds, “Stranger Things”), who decide to take a week and completely unplug from social media and the world, staying at a friend’s cabin upstate.
Unbeknownst to them, the world falls under attack by aliens, and despite their obvious lack of survival skills, they will have to find a way to save themselves.
Where the film worked best for me was when it was having fun at the expense of modern culture, especially those who don’t quite realize how silly they can sound. A prime example is a conversation Jack has early on with a friend who is about to get married. The friend talks at length about how his wedding will be carbon-neutral, only in the next breath to brag about his mother flying in an eight-piece band to perform.
