‘Love and Monsters’ is a fun ride through monster-infested world

I’ve been in a bit of rut lately, choosing less-than-stellar movies from the multitude of offerings provided to us each week. Fortunately, that streak has ended, thanks to “Love and Monsters,” which hit premium video on demand (VOD) last weekend.

The movie is quite entertaining, and easily one of the best films I’ve seen lately. One of the movie’s biggest strengths is its ability to maintain a light atmosphere from start to finish while dealing with some heavy material at times, avoiding the opportunity to brood on the darker side of the story while simultaneously not cheapening the emotional weight those moments give the overall film.

Sure, in a lot of ways “Love and Monsters” feels like a PG-13 version of “Zombieland” that replaces zombies with giant mutated monsters, but I really liked “Zombieland,” and this one is different enough that there’s room to enjoy both.
