Fiddler Crab Festival organizers are seeking volunteers

    Posted on January 8, 2021

As organizers move forward with the 13th annual Steinhatchee Fiddler Crab Festival, the Steinhatchee Chamber of Commerce is urgently seeking volunteers to help staff the event.

After considering concerns associated with the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, county commissioners voted 4-1 Monday night in favor of allowing the event to continue, clearing the way for the Steinhatchee River Chamber of Commerce to utilize the Steinhatchee Community Center and other public property.

The festival, which is held during the Valentine’s Day/ President’s Day weekend (Feb. 12-14), typically draws thousands of people to the coastal community and is a major economic driver for local businesses during the tourist offseason.

With the festival now just a month away, organizers are urging anyone interested in assisting with the festival to contact the Steinhatchee Chamber office.

“As you may have heard, the decision was just made to proceed with the 13th Annual Steinhatchee Fiddler Crab Festival,” Wessels said.

“This is exciting news for many, but concerning for some who are worried about COVID-19. Folks have normally already prepared to volunteer, but with the festival being in question as to if it would even take place this year, the need for volunteers is getting urgent, as the festival is quickly approaching,” Wessels added.

Some volunteers who have assisted with the festival in the past will not be able to help staff gates, collect admission and provide armbands due to COVID-19 concerns.

“The need for volunteers is great,” Wessels said.

If you would like to help in any way – even if for just a few hours — please contact either Alicia (727-667- 4177) or Pam (352-440- 1236) at the Steinhatchee Chamber.
