NEW YORK, 1953: Children gather beneath the cool leaves of a cluster of apple trees, as relatives brave the late-August sun to pluck the delicious reds from the branches of a neighboring row.
“One…two…three… four…five,” Carolyn Demps slowly counts on her fingers, her words slow and smooth, encouraging the little ones to follow along.
At just eight years of age, Demps herself was but a child, yet she already knew her place in the world.
“I was born to teach,” the now 75-year-old said in a matter-of-fact tone.
