When Dreamworks released its animated caveman comedy, “The Croods,” back in 2013, it was a pleasant surprise, full of hilarious sight gags and a heartfelt story about family. Last fall, its sequel, “The Croods: A New Age,” was one of only a handful of films to receive a nationwide theatrical release during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, at least one not associated with a dual streaming or video on demand (VOD) release.
Perhaps because of that, the film has continued to do well — at least the new-normal version of well — at the box office, picking up a total of $52.4 million to date. It also grabbed the weekend box office crown three of the last four weeks. Including worldwide takes, the film has grossed a combined $156.1 million.
Perhaps because of its recent box office success, I hadn’t even realized that the movie became available last week for both home-video purchase (on DVD and Blu-ray), as well as online rental ($5.99) until I came across it while trying to decide what to watch.
Since I really enjoyed the original film, I jumped at the chance to watch the sequel at home for a reasonable price. And, I’m glad I did because the movie is quite entertaining, combining the same mixture of hilarious sight gags and strong storytelling that made the first film so enjoyable.
