    The fate of the summer blockbuster season could rest on this weekend

    We are now in April, which in the pre-COVID-19 world would usually mark the lead up to the summer blockbuster season with several big-budget films vying for our attention. Although we’re not out of the woods yet when it comes to COVID, the next few weeks could prove to be pivotal as far as how this summer’s blockbuster season plays out, or if there is one at all.

    That might be overstating matters, but the past week or so has delivered a mix of positive and negative news on the movie theaters front that has me both hopeful and concerned. This includes Regal Cinemas beginning to re-open operations in North America, Disney pushing much of its summer slate of films back by several months and the first domestic film since the start of COVID-19 to make a splashy debut at the box office, albeit in China.
